Emirates to Suspend Flights to Nigeria Due to Repatriation Challenges
In a significant development for travelers, Emirates Airlines has announced that it will be suspending all flights to and from Nigeria starting September 1st. The decision comes after ongoing difficulties in repatriating airline revenue from the country—a challenge that has been affecting several international carriers.
Nigeria has been facing a persistent foreign currency shortage, largely due to under-investment in key sectors and the long-standing issue of oil pipeline theft. As a result, international airlines are struggling to access the funds they've earned within the country. Emirates alone reportedly has $85 million trapped in Nigeria as of July, with the amount increasing by approximately $10 million each month.
Despite multiple attempts to initiate dialogue with Nigerian authorities, Emirates says no meaningful progress has been made. With rising financial losses and no resolution in sight, the airline has made the difficult choice to halt operations in the Nigerian market.
This move is likely to impact both business and leisure travelers, as Emirates has been a key player in connecting Nigeria to global destinations via its Dubai hub. The Federal Ministry of Aviation has yet to issue a response to the airline's announcement.
Flyallover will continue to monitor this situation closely and provide updates for travelers affected by the suspension. For those with upcoming travel plans involving Emirates and Nigeria, it is advisable to explore alternative routes or contact the airline directly for assistance with rescheduling or refunds.
