ITA Airways Joins SkyTeam’s Sustainable Flight Challenge with Eco-Friendly Innovation in the Skies
At Flyallover, we love to spotlight the aviation world’s most exciting leaps toward a greener future — and ITA Airways is doing just that by participating in SkyTeam’s Sustainable Flight Challenge (TSFC), a global competition driving innovation for a more sustainable aviation industry.
Flight AZ 110, operated by an Airbus A320, marks the first of two flights ITA Airways has organized as part of this challenge. What makes this flight special? It's designed to be the most sustainable medium-haul experience ever offered by the airline — a bold step toward eco-conscious air travel.
The Sustainable Flight Challenge, held from May 1–14, 2022, brings together 16 SkyTeam member airlines in a friendly but impactful competition. Each airline is tasked with testing experimental strategies to cut down the environmental impact of their operations — all with the ultimate goal of turning these trial efforts into long-term best practices.
ITA Airways has pulled out all the stops for this challenge, integrating several innovative measures into both its flight and ground operations. These include:
-
Selecting aircraft with a lower environmental footprint
-
Using alternative fuels
-
Offering sustainable in-flight catering
-
Implementing recycling programs onboard
-
Enhancing the passenger experience with green-focused services
-
Providing a digital newsstand to cut down on paper waste
-
Committing to carbon offsetting through global reforestation projects in Africa and South America
Thanks to these efforts, both challenge flights will achieve net-zero emissions in terms of fuel impact — a milestone that highlights the power of collaboration, innovation, and responsibility in aviation.
Sustainability has been a core pillar of ITA Airways’ mission from day one. With a new-generation fleet and ongoing efforts to reduce their environmental footprint, they’re helping pave the way for a cleaner, more efficient future in the skies.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Sustainable Flight Challenge unfolds — and keep flying greener with Flyallover.
