Qatar Airways Adjusts Operations for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
With the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 fast approaching, Qatar Airways is making strategic adjustments to its flight network to accommodate the surge in passenger traffic. The airline is temporarily suspending services to 18 destinations, reallocating resources to increase flight frequencies on high-demand routes. Additionally, Hamad International Airport (HIA) is making space for foreign airlines bringing fans to Qatar, ensuring a seamless travel experience during the world’s biggest football tournament.
Preparing for an Unprecedented Surge in Air Traffic
Qatar Airways Group CEO HE Akbar al-Baker emphasized that the airline's top priority is smooth operations as hundreds of flights arrive daily during the tournament. With 32 teams competing, the event is expected to bring over 200,000 passengers per day through HIA and the recently reopened Doha International Airport (DIA).
To efficiently manage this influx, Qatar Airways and the Qatari government have introduced major operational adjustments, including:
-
Allocating additional airport slots and gates to international airlines.
-
Introducing a special FIFA World Cup livery on select aircraft.
-
Launching “Match Day Shuttle Flights” in collaboration with flydubai, Kuwait Airways, Oman Air, and Saudia to transport over 18,000 fans daily.
Special Flight Operations for Football Fans
To enhance the experience for incoming fans, Qatar Airways will deploy its Airbus A380 on the London Heathrow–Doha route during the tournament. This move is facilitated by a slot pair allocated by IAG, one of Europe’s largest airline groups. As IAG’s largest shareholder, Qatar Airways has leveraged this partnership to increase capacity and accommodate more football enthusiasts.
The “Match Day Shuttle Flights” program allows fans to fly in for a game and return within 24 hours, eliminating the need for accommodation. Every aircraft on these routes will feature a special FIFA World Cup livery, further elevating the excitement of the journey.
A Warm Welcome Awaits Football Fans in Qatar
As the official carrier of Qatar, Qatar Airways is committed to making this historic tournament a memorable experience for football lovers worldwide. By adjusting its network, collaborating with regional airlines, and ensuring efficient air traffic management, Qatar Airways is playing a pivotal role in facilitating seamless travel for fans.
With the world’s attention focused on Qatar for this exhilarating event, the airline looks forward to welcoming travelers from across the globe for an unforgettable World Cup experience.
