Perched boldly on the Danube River’s edge, where water meets cliffs and history merges with myth, Golubac Fortress is one of the most iconic sights in Serbia. Towering over the Iron Gates gorge and guarding the entrance to the Đerdap National Park, this 14th-century fortress once echoed with the clashing swords of empires.
Now beautifully restored, Golubac offers travelers a rare combination of stunning natural scenery, medieval architecture, and immersion into Serbia’s turbulent frontier history.
The fortress boasts 9 massive towers, some soaring over 25 meters high
Walk the restored walls, climb spiral staircases, and imagine life in the age of knights and sieges
Tower 1 is the oldest, while Tower 8 offers the most panoramic view
The fortress sits right on the riverbank, creating postcard-perfect reflections
On a clear day, you can see across to Romania
The mighty Danube, narrowed here into the Iron Gate, flows with quiet power
There are four main routes of exploration: Blue, Green, Red, and Black (graded by difficulty and tower access)
Casual travelers can enjoy the Blue Route along the lower fortress
Adventurers will love the Black Route, which climbs into the upper towers
Learn about Golubac’s strategic importance through multimedia exhibits and 3D maps
Interactive touchscreens and historical reconstructions bring the story alive
Great for history buffs and kids alike
