Khor Virap is one of Armenia’s most spiritually and historically significant monasteries, famously located at the foot of Mount Ararat. It’s the site where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years before converting the Armenian King Trdat III to Christianity — an event that led Armenia to become the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion in 301 AD.
The monastery’s name means “deep dungeon,” referencing the pit where Gregory was held. It is located just 40 km south of Yerevan, near the border with Turkey, making it a popular half-day trip from the capital.
Built in the 17th century atop older foundations.
Offers tranquil surroundings and stunning architecture with khachkars (cross-stones) and carvings.
Accessible by a steep metal ladder, visitors can descend into the 6-meter-deep dungeon where Saint Gregory was held.
Dimly lit and atmospheric, it’s one of Armenia’s most powerful religious experiences.
Khor Virap offers the most iconic panoramic view of Mount Ararat, especially at sunrise or during golden hour.
Weather permitting, the snowcapped peak looms dramatically over the plain, making this a favorite spot for photographers.
